| Day 2 Knuckles Mountain | Knuckles Plantation Bungalow | The Knuckles Mountain Range, east of Kandy, dominates the panoramas due to its five peaks' apparent similarity to the knuckles of a clinched fist. The hills here are some of the most untamed and unspoiled in Sri Lanka, with vast, mainly unknown trekking and wildlife-spotting opportunities, and are surrounded by numerous tea farms. It's a stunning area to explore on foot, with tremendous biodiversity and a diverse range of vegetation. The topography spans from riverine to montane forests, savannah grasslands, and semi-evergreen woodlands, making it ideal for trekkers. The southern edge of the Knuckles Mountain Range leads to the Mahaweli River (the country's largest) and the Victoria Reservoir with its massive dam, which currently provides a considerable portion of Sri Lanka's power. Views of the land that Sri Lanka's first people, called Veddhas, used to live on can be seen here. |
